4g Adapter For Mac

The MacBook's future is dongle-filled.

Apple's new MacBook is pushing the notebook's future closer toward wireless everything — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, Continuity and Handoff all play crucial parts in this mobile dream — but you're most likely going to have to pay up for extra cables and adapters/dongles to hook up all of your other existing wired accessories.

It's the day after Apple'sbig 'Spring Forward' event in San Francisco where it introduced the new MacBook and announced pricing for the Apple Watch. We're all still reeling in and absorbing all of the nuggets of news the company didn't have time to talk about on stage.

The adapter is the Edimax Dual Band AC1200.It costs $25 (it’s $20 on Amazon at the time of this writing). As an adapter, it’s fine. It supports 802.11n and 802.11ac, has speeds up to 866Mbps. The DWM-222 4G LTE USB Adapter is a portable travel modem that allows you to connect to the Internet wherever you are. With fast downlink and uplink data rates, as well as low latency, it provides you with a high-performance and responsive connection when you’re on the road. The Apple USB-C-to-USB Adapter lets you connect iOS devices and many of your USB accessories to a MacBook with a USB-C port. Plug the USB-C end of the adapter into the USB-C port on your MacBook, and then connect your flash drive, camera or other standard USB device.

Although we went into the event expecting the Apple Watch to take center stage, it was the new ultra-thin and light MacBook that stole the show.

It's easy to fawn all over the new MacBook's gorgeous high-res Retina display, two-pound lightness and 13.1mm thickness all day long. Or perhaps its fanless logicboard design, new keyboard with 'butterfly' mechanism keys, new Force Touch trackpad or 9 hour battery life has us all pumped.

But no matter how futuristic the new MacBook is, it's got one ugly (or pretty, depending on where you stand) truth: USB-C.

To recap, USB-C is the future of USBs. It's smaller and reversible. With a single USB-C port you can charge, output video and transfer data. It's the ultimate consolidation, but it's not perfect.

While a USB-C port enabled Apple to build an even thinner MacBook, the new port also breaks clean compatibility with all existing full-sized USB accessories. To connect a flash drive or an external USB hard drive or a wired mouse or keyboard, you'll need to buy a USB-C to USB dongle. To charge the new MacBook and output video to an external display and get a full-sized USB, you need to buy another separate, more expensive dongle. To get an SD card reader, you'll need to buy a USB SD card reader and one of the USB-C adapters.

Below you'll also find my quick sketches of the rats nest your new MacBook will be with all those adapters and USB hubs hanging out. It ain't pretty.

Dongles. Dongles. Dongles.

Does this sound familiar? If you're well-versed in your Apple history, the new MacBook sounds exactly like the original 2008 MacBook Air that Steve Jobs slid out of a manilla envelope. Users cried foul at the lack of an ethernet port. Apple's response? You guessed it: a $29 USB to ethernet dongle. The original Air had one full-sized USB port. If you wanted more USB ports you needed to buy a USB hub; it was more money tossed at a thing to connect other things. A single USB port wasn't enough and sure enough Apple put a second one in the 2010 redesign.

The story's the same for the new MacBook. It's dongle hell. USB-C will be making its way to other computers this year. And we'll undoubtedly see new accessories like flash drives with USB-C connectors soon, but in the interim the new MacBook which starts at $1299 comes with an asterisk of dongles — ones that aren't cheap by any means (but those will arrive from third-party companies soon enough, too).

USB-C to USB Adapter: $19

The USB-C half goes into the new MacBook and on the other end you get a full-sized 'female' USB connector. You'll need one of these to connect a regular flash drive or hard drive or to charge a smartphone or tablet. You'll also need one of these plus a USB hub to expand the one full-sized USB port.

USB-C VGA Multiport Monitor Adapter: $79

Sometimes you need to hook up your computer to a projector. You'll have to pick up this $79 dongle for your new MacBook if you fit into that group. There are three ports on this adapter: a USB-C, VGA connector and a full-sized USB port. With this adapter, you'll be able to charge, output to a projector and transfer data at the same time. Add an additional USB hub to get even more USB ports.

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Monitor Adapter: $79

This adapter is basically the same thing as the one above. The only difference is instead of a VGA connector, there's an HDMI port. Same dealio. Same price. Same rat's nest.
